Examination and Goal Setting

I used to love a chance to examine and rest goals at the beginning of the year and tried to do it every month. I didn’t always succeed, but this year my planner has me do it weekly and again with the start of every new church season. (We are currently the 5th Sunday after Epiphany).

This underlined sentence really stood out to me and highlights what is different about this examen and traditional goal setting.

Reflect on the previous week with a posture of humility and gratitude.

At least in my mind, when I think of examining past days, weeks, or years, I’m tempted to be critical and focus on what needs to be improved. Reflecting on the previous week with a posture of humility and gratitute is a whole different matter and takes the focus off our own human strengths, weaknesses, pride, and self reliance and turns it to the all powerful God who holds us in his hands and hides us under his wings.
