When, from his prison, he talked about his prayers for his children, I gained a whole new perspective about the power of prayer and God’s power and sovereign control of our lives. He’s been in prison for 15 years, since his children were young, since they were just babies. It has to have been hard to go from being daddy’s little girl, to having to drive four hours to visit him in prison on occasion. And it is no wonder that as she got older she quit wanting to visit. And one can understand his continued prayers for restoration as year after year past and she refused to come.
But then God asked him to pray a harder prayer. He realized his prayer needed not to be for restoration of their relationship, but that God do whatever it took to restore his child’s relationship with God. That prayer started some very rough months for that child, as she slid downhill and caused the daddy much pain. But that was the beginning of a new work. After three months, things finally started changing. A new job, new surroundings, and then a grandfather materializing from Iran, and then, what he had been longing for, for so long, a visit.
This man who can rarely talk to his daughter, or write to his daughter, cannot see his daughter, or lead by example; can have the greatest impact on her life by praying for her and trusting her to God, her heavenly Father. Someday she will know that her heavenly Father has been with her when her earthly father is not. We now join him in praying for this girl and for his son. God is a God of miracles and restoration, but most of all, we pray God will restore their relationship with himself and continue the work he has begun.
