A Love Like No Other – Gilbert Blythe vs Hosea

Gilbert Blythe loved Anne Shirly like every girl wants to be loved, unconditionally without regard to how she behaved or loved him back. It was always Anne for him. There is a security found in that kind of love that everyone longs to have. He wasn’t a wimp. He got mad. But in the end, all that mattered was he loved her always.

The Lord said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.”

Hosea 3:1 NIV

God called a man to love his adultering wife, who was acting as a prostitute, to be an example of how God himself loves.

Gilbert Blythe was impressive, but even he didn’t love that much. Anne does some mean things, but she doesn’t go off and have affairs and drunken orgies. Imagine the story of Anne of Green Gables and imagine the same ending, however in the middle of the story, rather than acting aloof Anne posts herself up on Backpage and starts having sex with 10 men a night.

That’s the story of Hosea, only she leaves him again and he still loves her, in word and deed, and he still promises gifts and blessings if she will return. He loves her regardless.

Hosea is the story God used to give an example of his love. That is what it means when we say God is Love.
